Discover the Charm of Upcountry Maui: A Local’s Guide to the Best Things to Do
Although I grew up on the shores of Waiehu, I’ve spent my entire adult life as an Upcountry resident—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I bought my first home in Pukalani, where I learned the rhythm of country living. Later, I moved further up the slopes to Kula, where every day begins with cool, crisp 52-degree mornings and warms into a perfectly comfortable 75 to 85 degrees. And don’t even get me started on the views—watching the light shift over the central valley below is something I’ll never get used to.
So, whether you're visiting or live here and haven’t explored beyond the beach, let me take you through some of my favorite things to do in Upcountry Maui—an area that’s equal parts refreshing, grounding, and inspiring.
🏞️ 1. Haleakalā National Park: Sunrise and Beyond
Start your day early at Haleakalā National Park. The sunrise is a spiritual experience, but the crater’s stark beauty is equally moving by daylight. Don’t forget to reserve in advance for sunrise, and dress warm—trust me, it’s cold up there.
For the adventurous, trails like Sliding Sands offer unforgettable hikes through a lunar-like landscape.
🐐 2. Surfing Goat Dairy: For the Young (and Young at Heart)
Down the road in Kula, Surfing Goat Dairy is a blast. My family loves the hands-on tours—feeding goats, watching the cheesemaking process, and sampling their creamy award-winning spreads. If you want something more immersive, their evening chores tour is worth it.
🌸 3. Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm: A Fragrant Escape
Whenever I need to unwind, I head to Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm. With its terraced gardens, sweeping views, and calming lavender scents, it’s the perfect place to stroll and reset. The gift shop is great for finding unique, locally made souvenirs too.
🍍 4. Maui Pineapple Tour: Sweet, Juicy, and Informative
A bit downhill in Haliʻimaile, the Maui Pineapple Tour is as fun as it is educational. Touring the fields and learning about the pineapple lifecycle gave me a whole new appreciation for one of Hawaii’s most iconic crops. Plus, you get to taste pineapples straight from the field—nothing fresher.
🏘️ 5. Makawao Town: Where Art Meets Paniolo
Makawao is one of my favorite weekend stops. This old paniolo (cowboy) town is filled with surprises—boutiques, glass-blowing studios, and Komoda Bakery’s famous cream puffs. It’s where cowboy grit meets creative spirit.
If you’re around during the 4th of July, the Makawao Rodeo is a can’t-miss local tradition.
🍷 6. MauiWine in Ulupalakua: Sip with a View
The drive to MauiWine alone is worth the trip—winding roads, pastures, and ocean vistas. But the wine tasting, especially their pineapple wines, seals the deal. The grounds are peaceful, the staff friendly, and the connection to King Kalākaua’s cottage adds a layer of history.
🌿 7. Kula Botanical Garden: Peaceful and Lush
This hidden gem offers eight acres of beautifully maintained gardens. It’s quiet, never too crowded, and perfect for a slow walk. You’ll see native plants, colorful exotics, and even some quirky sculptures tucked among the greenery. Learn more at the Kula Botanical Garden website.
🐝 8. Maui Bees: A Sweet Stop
Maui Bees in Kula is one of my favorite examples of sustainable farming done right. Their raw honey is delicious, but what I love even more is how they educate guests about bees and organic agriculture. Don’t miss their farm stand—or one of their seasonal farm-to-table dinners.
🍽️ 9. Farm-to-Table Dining: Local Flavors at Their Best
Upcountry is packed with cozy, character-filled eateries where everything is fresh and local:
-
Haliʻimaile General Store: Chef Bev Gannon’s iconic spot serves island fusion with style.
 -
Kula Bistro: Portions are hearty, prices fair, and flavors homey.
 -
Grandma’s Coffee House: In Keokea, it’s our go-to for breakfast and a mug of Maui-grown coffee.

🌅 10. Ocean Vodka Distillery: End Your Day in Style
Round out your adventure with a cocktail and sunset at Ocean Vodka. The views from the lawn are jaw-dropping, especially as golden hour lights up the central valley. Their café has tasty small plates, and their commitment to sustainability is impressive.
📣 Final Thoughts
Upcountry isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. It’s the scent of eucalyptus, the sound of roosters at sunrise, the taste of fresh-from-the-farm produce, and the peace that comes from wide-open spaces and slow drives home.
It’s not the Maui you see in the brochures—but if you ask me, it’s the Maui that feels most like home.
